Muslim leader admits that Qur’an allows for wife-beating

Australia: Muslim leader admits that Qur’an allows for wife-beating, Jihad Watch, February 23, 2017:

Why would anyone expect him to say anything different? The mandate to beat one’s wife is in the Qur’an:

“Men have authority over women because Allah has made the one superior to the other, and because they spend their wealth to maintain them. Good women are obedient. They guard their unseen parts because Allah has guarded them. As for those from whom you fear disobedience, admonish them and send them to beds apart and beat them.” — Qur’an 4:34

Muhammad “struck me on the chest which caused me pain, and then said: Did you think that Allah and His Apostle would deal unjustly with you?” — Aisha (Sahih Muslim 2127)

“Keysar Trad: ‘violence is a last resort,’” by Stefanie Balogh and Sam Buckingham-Jones, The Australian, February 23, 2017:

A prominent Muslim leader has apologised for statements conceding his religion allows for a husband to beat his wife as a “last resort”, saying he was “clumsy” in a television interview.

Keysar Trad, the president of the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils, said the verse in the Koran that condones domestic violence “plays on the psychology of the man”, who would never resort to a physical beating because gifts like flowers, chocolates or a dinner date would come first.

“I’ve studied that verse in depth and I’ve discussed it with a number of Islamic scholars,” Mr Trad told Sky News’s Andrew Bolt last night.

“What this verse is saying is playing on the psychology of the man saying ‘violence is a last resort’. The first thing you must do is counselling.”

He said while part of the phrase is often translated as “admonish”, the Arabic word is closer to “give advice” or “engage in counselling”.

“What it does is a calming effect before you even consider using your hand, before you even consider any act of violence. Have you checked box number one, which is counselling? Have you checked box two? What does counselling entail?” he said.

“Well, maybe next time you should bring her a bunch of flowers, maybe next time you should bring her a box of chocolates, maybe next time you should take her out for dinner.”

This afternoon, Mr Trad released a statement categorically condemning all violence against women.

“Acknowledging my clumsy attempt to explain a verse from the holy Qur’an, I want to categorically condemn all forms of violence, especially violence against women, I condemn and deplore it and stress my continued zeal to support women against violence,” Mr Trad said.

“I sincerely apologise if my attempt to explain the verse is understood any differently, the Qur’an is a holy book that aims to improve human relations as well as spiritual relations, the verses of the Qur’an must be read alongside other verses and Hadiths that deal with the particular topic.

“For example, the Qur’an encourages partners to live amicably (with love and compassion) or separate beautifully (2:229).” Said Mr. Trad.

“Our beloved prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings upon him said: “The most perfect believer is one who is the best in courtesy and amiable manners, and the best among you people is one who is most kind and courteous to his wife”.”

‘Where are the feminists?’

Immigration Minister Peter Dutton has questioned the absence of feminist outrage in relation to Mr Trad’s incendiary comments, accusing them of hypocrisy and describing the Muslim leader as “mad’’.

Mr Dutton described Mr Trad’s views as dangerous and said he should be roundly condemned.

“Where are the feminists? Where is the ABC on this Ray?’’ Mr Dutton said to Ray Hadley on 2GB.

“I suspect they will have nothing to say about it because they’re hypocrites.’’…

  1. The Bible supports stoning of people who have affairs. And claims that women are wicked, sinful creatures who deserve to be put in their place. Christianity is not better. Islam teaches charity unlike any of the three main monotheistic religions. This is a completely unfair assessment of Islam. You can’t pick and choose only the bad parts that support your hateful position.

    1. But are Christians acting upon this in the world? Do Christians carry on like this in America, Europe or Australia? While Christians don’t act on the archaic ideas of the Old Testament, Muslims are acting in large numbers on the terrible commands of the Quran. This is the key distinction.

    2. Actually they’re not. The majority of Muslims, just like the majority of Christians, push for peace and dignity in the world, rather than violence. I’m sure you’ve heard of the Westboro Baptist Church in America – well, comparing ISIS to Islam is like comparing Westboro to Christianity. They ignore the main tenants of their scripture, instead manipulating the scripture to fit their violent needs. Christians all over the world throughout history have SLAUGHTERED millions of people because of their evangelist beliefs. Today, synagogues and temples are being sacked and burned and vandilized by christians who claim religious superiority.

I agree, ISIS is horrible and needs to be eliminated, but it is not a representation of Islam as a whole. If the Western world is to defeat ISIS, we need to accept the fact that these are violent PEOPLE, rather than radical Islamists. Violence and hatred are violence and hatred. Don’t excuse behavior by saying it’s “religion.”

    3. You’ve responded by saying a lot here so I’ll answer one at a time. So you tell me: which Christian group around the world is advocating for stoning that possesses the same influence is ISIS, Al Qaeda, Boko Haram, Saudi Arabia or Qatar? I’m focusing on 2017 and when we’re discussing religious fundamentalism Islam takes the prize.

    4. OK. First Saudi Arabia and Qatar aren’t islamic groups. They’re nations.

Secondly, look at Army of God (USA) (1) and Eastern Lightning (Church of the Almighty God) (2) in China, which advocates murder of abortion providers and gays. The Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) in Uganda which not only promotes murder, but uses CHILDREN to commit these acts. I’m sure you’ve heard about child soldiers and I’m sure you heard about Kony 2012 – this was his group. How many muslims are in the world, and HOW MANY actually believe ISIS is “the way?” Very few. This isn’t radical islam we’re fighting. This is a bunch of insane people who are using religion to justify committing horrible acts of violence against people they judge as inferior.

    5. Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the dozens of other Islamic countries who use parts of sharia (religiously derived law) are in fact acting upon Islamic teaching. The more sharia, the worse the country. So it’s just a handful of extremists hey? Unlikely. Yes, a handful of Muslims will commit the actual violent act. But we see flash points where the global solo distort of the Ummah holds through. This can be seen in Muslim views towards Israel, unbridled immigration into the West, free speech, homosexuality and in other areas. Another shameful example of moderates doing the bidding of extremists was in moleenbeek, Belgium, in which Europe’s most wanted terrorist hid amongst the Muslim community, ordering pizza and living a good life for 6 months. So while the majority aren’t terrorists, the majority act in ways somewhat conducive to the terrorists actions.

    6. To address each of those points: (1) I’m probably more educated than you are on sharia law, so don’t even argue with this historian right now. You base your assumptions of Sharia law on the fact that it’s horrible in all aspects. That is not true. Also, it’s not your country or your culture. Who are you to make that judgment on the quality of their lives? (2) Yes. A handful of extremists. Look at Hitler. That was A SINGLE MAN who was responsible for the slaughter of millions of Jews. (3) Israel is no where NEAR innocent in this… they bomb the shit out of Palestine because they believe that their ancestral rights are more important than the thousands of people who will be displaced and homeless. (4) Christians have adopted policies of closed borders (Look at the despicable state of the USA right now as Trump closes borders… he’s trying to build a wall, for fuck’s sake). Immigration into the west is not a bad thing, so why are you painting it as such – we should be welcoming people who are fleeing oppression, not turning them down. Hatred only brews hatred. (5) Christians also hate homosexuals and apparently the United States is heading toward hating free speech too. (6) Fear is a powerful motivator. I’m not excusing the hiding of Abdeslam in Moleenbeek, but what if they were fearful. Thousands of Christians housed Jews who were being persecuted. Nations house their terrorists too. Then there are terrorists who aren’t even in hiding.

My point is, you’re blog talks all about how the terrorist problem is ISLAM, but I’m trying to point out to you that Islam actually preaches the MOST PEACE out of the three main monotheistic religions. How much do you, as a christian, give to charity each year? The Quran calls for 20%. As a Christian myself, I am ashamed of how other christians clump all Muslims into the category of “extremists” or “colluding with exgtremists” because the majority of them do not. And most of those who do, do so in fear. I am done commenting on this ridiculous post. I know that I’m not going to change you, but I want the information to get out there that Christianity is equally guilty as Islam for oppression of its peoples – albeit, in different ways.

    7. “It’s not your country or your culture” “so who are you to make that judgement”? This is cultural relativism at its worst. Well given that, who are we to judge culture in German during the Hitler era, or any other atrocity that occurred in history? There are so many other inaccuracies. But most importantly you claim Islam is the most ‘peaceful’ of all monotheistic religions. Oh really. Well do a simple comparison between the great Jesus and the grand pedophile, anti Semite murderer Muhammed and there is no comparison.

    8. The Old Testament supports stoning of people who have affairs. But the Old Testament has, in Christianity, been overruled by the New Testament. Jesus himself forbade stoning even under such conditions. And it is Christianity that teaches charity, and teaches it all too well I’m afraid.

You should stop picking and choosing what you want yourself before asking others to do so. Because otherwise it is just hypocrisy.

  2. Sometimes I think that the Western feminist support for Islam is just a shit test, seeing which “Alpha” males will rise to the surface. It’s the biological urge of women to vet a man’s virility. Like when you see two male lions fighting to the death, while the female lion watches intently from the bush, waiting to mate with the winner.

    1. It’s really disappointing how some men can’t argue with a woman without resulting to sexism. Healthy debate is good but obviously some men can only think of women in certain terms.

    2. Perhaps this is true. It is also a shame that men are seen as less qualified to discuss the topic of feminism and find their opinions disregarded as ‘mansplaining’ and of course ‘sexism’. Especially if your one of those terrible white males!!!
